RIPTA, United Healthcare settle data breach lawsuit with RI ACLU

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — A settlement has been reached in a 2022 class-action lawsuit filed against RIPTA and United Healthcare by the Rhode Island ACLU.

The suit was filed by the organization in the wake of a 2021 data breach that the ACLU said exposed the personal data of thousands of RIPTA and Rhode Island state employees.

A $350,000 fund will be created by RIPTA and United Healthcare as part of the agreement, which will give up to $1,000 to each person affected in the breach.

They will also be provided with five years of free credit monitoring, according to the RI ACLU.
