CRANSTON, R.I. (WLNE) — Rhode Island State Police said a trooper was injured in a crash on Interstate 95 South Tuesday afternoon.

Just after 3 p.m., a trooper was inspecting a tractor-trailer in the breakdown lane near the Laurens Street overpass.

RISP said a minivan driving in the first travel lane veered off the highway into the breakdown lane and struck the trooper’s parked cruiser.

As a result, the cruiser was pushed into the tractor-trailer, causing the trooper to be pinned inside the vehicle, according to RISP.

Cranston firefighters were able to free the trooper, who was taken to Rhode Island Hospital with minor injuries, and later released.

The driver of the minivan was taken to Kent County Hospital with “complaints of pain,” according to RISP.

The driver of the tractor-trailed was uninjured.

The crash is under investigation.
