Rob Gronkowski to sign one-day contract with Pats, officially retire with team

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (WLNE) — Former New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski might have been in a Tampa Bay Buccaneers uniform for his final NFL play, but he will retire a Patriot.

According to an announcement from Gronkowski and the team, “Gronk” will sign a one-day contract with the Patriots, allowing him to officially retire as a member of the organization.

The announcement came Monday in a video from Gronkowski and the Patriots, saying that one of Tom Brady’s most productive targets will sign the contract on November 12 at 12:15 p.m. at Gillette Stadium.

The 6’6″ Gronkowski was drafted in the second round of the 2010 NFL Draft by New England, immediately becoming a force for the Brady-led offense.

Gronkowski played for Bill Belichick’s Patriots from 2010-2018, winning three Super Bowl championships with the team and racking up 79 regular season touchdowns and 15 in the postseason.

He retired in 2018 at the age of 29 due to a string of injuries that plagued his career.

Following Tom Brady’s shocking free agent departure to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2020, Gronk came out of retirement and followed his QB to Florida.

The tandem helped lead the Bucs to a 2020 Super Bowl Championship over the Kansas City Chiefs.
