Robert De Niro speaks at Brown commencement

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The latest group of graduates receive their diplomas today as Brown University holds its commencement ceremonies. Thousands of people were on Brown’s campus today to watch family and friends receive their degrees.
Making a special appearance, actor Robert De Niro who received an honorary degree and gave some advice to the grads.
"Work for the change. Work to stop the insanity. Start now so the class of 2018 will graduate into a better world," he said.
He encouraged Brown graduates to keep up their hard work and to make the "real world" they’re entering a better place.
The academy award winner received an honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts. As to be expected at a liberal, ivy league university, the conversation quickly turned political.
"In movie terms, when you started school the country was an inspiring uplifting drama. You’re graduating into a tragic dumb comedy," joked De Niro.
Five others received honorary degrees including actor Daveed Diggs, from Hamilton fame.
Two graduates addressed their peers, asking them to make a positive impact on society.
"Especially in times when rhetoric aims to silence voices or discouraging seeking the unknown, we must hold ever true to our commitment to seeking and if necessary defending the silent," said Adriel Barrios-Anderson, one of the senior speakers.
Many graduates feeling inspired and grateful for their experiences and education at Brown.
"I’m really proud of myself and of my friends and all of the people I got to spend the last 4 years with, it’s pretty surreal," says graduate Casey Fisher.
The class of 2017 is the 249th class to graduate from Brown University.
