Roger Williams Park Zoo mourns loss of red panda

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The Roger Williams Park Zoo said Sunday that one of its male red pandas has died.
Rusty, who was 18-years-old, was humanely euthanized on Saturday due to an gastrointestinal disease. He was also receiving care for age-related arthritis.
The zoo said that Rusty was the oldest red panda in the care of any Association of Zoos and Aquariums facility. Staff are asking the public to share any photos of Rusty they have.
“His long life and health are a testament to his care team and their unwavering devotion to his care, health, and welfare,” staff said. “Rusty stole the hearts of countless visitors and will forever leave his mark on the hearts of those that cared for him.”
The zoo added that they are building a new habitat for their female red panda, Zen, to be opened next year.
