‘Roll with the punches’: How one local bakery is coping with skyrocketing egg prices

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Valentine’s Day means love is in the air, and in the oven, for local bakeries.

But this year, sky-high egg prices are adding an extra layer of challenge.

At Whisk Me Away Bakehouse in Providence, owner Morgan Gray is keeping her spirits high, and her prices steady, despite the cost of eggs doubling during the ongoing bird flu outbreak

“Anywhere from half a dozen eggs to like eight dozen so when you add that up with how many cakes we’re putting out and how many cakes we’re making, that tends to add up pretty quickly and also the buttercream,” said Gray.

Gray said the key to surviving this price hike is flexibility, something she learned during the pandemic.

“It definitely affects us a lot, but this isn’t our first rodeo, we got through COVID with those crazy prices, so we just kind of roll with the punches,” said Gray.

Baker Adriane Thompson said the spike in egg prices isn’t just impacting the bakery, they’re affecting her shopping habits, too.

“I’m buying fewer eggs at home and I’m honestly avoiding the egg aisle,” said Thompson.

So, while eggs may be expensive, the love baked into every cake and cupcake this Valentine’s Day is still priceless.

Whisk Me Away is now offering a variety of Valentine’s Day treats including red velvet scones and brownies.
