Safe storage gun bill headed to McKee’s desk

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Governor Dan McKee is set to sign the Safe Storage Bill today.

The bill will ensure that all guns will be stored in a locked container or equipped to render them inoperable when not in use.

Under the legislation, unsafe storage of a firearm would be a civil offense punishable by a fine of up to $250 for a first offense and $1,000 for a second.

A third or more offense could risk jail time.

The current law only punishes gun owners who leave a firearm within a child’s reach, but with no jail time required.

McKee will sign the bill at 3 p.m.
