Sam Shepard, actor and playwright, dies at 73, family spokesman says

NEW YORK (AP) — Actor, playwright and sometimes rock musician Sam Shepard has died. His family says Shepard died Thursday of complications related to Lou Gehrig’s disease at his home in Kentucky.

He was 73. Shepard won a Pulitzer Prize for writing the play “Buried Child.” He got an Oscar nomination for playing test pilot Chuck Yeager in the 1983 film “The Right Stuff.”

He appeared in dozens of films, including “Black Hawk Down,” “Days of Heaven,” “Steel Magnolias” and most recently in the Netflix series “Bloodline.”  

Shepard co-wrote the play “Cowboy Mouth” with musician Patti Smith in 1971.

He co-wrote the Bob Dylan song “Brownsville Girl.”
