It’s a historic day in Fall River where a new mayor is taking the reigns of the city after former Mayor Will Flanagan was recalled earlier this month.

Mayor Elect Sam Sutter was sworn into office Tuesday morning at City Hall in front of a standing room only crowd.

The former Bristol County District Attorney beat out Flanagan in a recall election back on December 16. Flanagan was recalled by some 69 percent of voters.

A group of citizens started the effort to oust Flanagan after he implemented a new pay as you throw policy.

Sutter was elected with some 37 percent of the vote. He will now finish off Flanagan’s term and then have to run for re-election in November.

Sutter has appointed a transition team including two past Fall River mayors to help him as he takes office.

Sutter’s former office is handling the murder case of former New England Patriot star Aaron Hernandez. Sutter has said that stepping down will not effect that trial.
