Sections of turbine detach in Nantucket

NANTUCKET, Mass. (WLNE) — More debris from a wind turbine in Nantucket has fallen into the ocean, according to officials from according to officials with GE Vernova.

In a release, officials said that several sections of the turbine blade detached from the hub of the turbine with several large piercing entering the water column. Smaller pieces have floated to the surface, with additional debris landing on the turbine platform.

Some large pieces entered the water column, while smaller pieces floated on the surface. Additional debris had landed on the turbine platform, according to officials.

According to GE Vernova, this detachment was not unexpected, though it has been several days since any debris detachment was last observed.

The U.S. Coast Guard continues to enforce a 500-meter safety exclusion zone around the turbine.

GE Vernova and Vineyard Wind have continued to dispatch maritime crews to secure as much debris as possible from the waters.

Crews are working on a plan to safely remove the portions of the remains blade.
