Sen. Reed announces $178K for state air quality monitoring

WASHINGTON (WLNE) — As the Department of Environmental Management announces another air quality alert for Thursday, Sen. Jack Reed said he has secured $178,046 in federal funding to help detect bad air quality and alert the public.
Reed said the DEM is getting the funds under the Clean Air Act to gather data on regional air quality, evaluate it, and share it with the public in a timely manner.
“Clean air is critical to public health and our quality of life,” he added. “This type of federal funding can help us be better informed and prepared and we must continue working to prevent pollution and improve air quality.”
The Rhode Island Department of Health was awarded $500,000 in federal funding to conduct community air quality monitoring in Providence in November through the Inflation Reduction Act and American Rescue Plan Act.
Organizations including the Environmental Protection Agency and the American Lung Association have said that people with medical conditions to stay indoors, circulate air within homes, and keep an eye out for symptoms during times with poor air quality.
