Senator Whitehouse is calling on a Senate Committee to pass a Highway Funding Bill that will help Rhode Island fix some of its problem roads.

The long-term highway funding bill would last for six years and would allow RIDOT to plan some big projects.

The bill is running into a blockade in the Senate because the Finance Committee is trying to figure out how to pay for it.

Senator Whitehouse says getting the bill passed is especially important for Rhode Island.

“We've got some of the oldest infrastructure in the country.  We're one of the original states, we've got highways going back for centuries and they just take more money to fix.  We need to put the money into our roads and highways.”

The Highway Trust Fund runs out at the end of the month, and if this bill doesn’t get passed, it would mean cuts to part of the Federal funding to state DOT’s across the country.
