WARWICK, R.I. (WLNE) — Rhode Island Speaker of the House Joe Shekarchi will be on hand for an event at Kent Hospital Tuesday, celebrating Care New England remaining independent.

The hospital systems’ board of trustees voted to stay independent on July 6.

Care New England and Lifespan had proposed a merger earlier this year, that plan was rejected by Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha.

Hospital leaders will discuss future plans of continued care for patients and support of its staff.
