FALL RIVER, Mass. (WLNE) — The Fall River Police Department said that a shooting that injured a man and a woman on Wednesday was accidental.

According to Sergeant Moses Pereira, at approximately 1:50 p.m., police were called to the third floor apartment of a residence on John Street after multiple calls reported a man who was shot.

When first responders arrived, they said they found a man and a woman both with a gunshot wound to their chests.

After speaking with the victims, officers learned that both victims were shot after a “single unintentional discharge” of a gun. Officials said evidence from the scene supports the information provided by the victims.

Both the man and woman remain in the hospital and their injuries are not considered life-threatening, police said. One or both of the victims will also be facing gun charges for the incident.

Officials said the male victim will remain in police custody as a fugitive from justice, due to an outstanding warrant for his arrest in the state of New Hampshire for an unarmed robbery.

The Fall River Police Department’s Major Crimes Division said it will continue to investigate the incident.
