Shoppers ready for tax-free weekend in Massachusetts
BRAINTREE, Mass. (WLNE) — Tax-free weekend returns to Massachusetts starting on Aug. 10.
“It’s always super crowded,” Boston resident Joy Oliver said. “Everybody is trying to make a deal.”
No sales tax will be charged to most items this weekend, although sales tax is still applied to items that cost $2,500 or more.
“I am retired so anything to save money,” Holbrook resident Janice Christoforo said.
According to a state webpage about the tax-free weekend, all purchases must be for personal use.
“I’m sure a bunch of people are going to get excited about it and spend a lot of money and I’m sure it is going to generate a lot of funds for the economy,” Brockton resident Samuel Campbell said.
The South Shore Plaza in Braintree is opening an hour earlier to allow more time for shoppers.
On Aug. 10 the plaza opens at 9 a.m. and on Aug. 11 shoppers can enter at 10 a.m.
Some shoppers are waiting for this weekend to make a big purchase.
“We do it every year,” said Oliver. “I made an appointment with Apple tomorrow to buy an iPad.”
While others are not interested in the sales.
“I don’t have any major purchases and I’m not planning on buying a bunch of furniture, so it’s not going to apply to me this year,” said Campbell.
The tax-free sale does apply to online purchases.
Gas, food, cars, and more are excluded from the tax-free weekend.
