Smiley, Perez provide update after person of interest detained in Brown shooting

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Mayor Brett Smiley and Police Chief Oscar Perez provided a community update after a person of interest was detained in connection with the Brown University shooting that left two people dead and nine injured.

Perez said that the investigation was “progressing fast” and that police were still performing searches and gathering evidence.

He added that the person of interest was in their 20s, and that no further details on their identity or motive could be released in order to not compromise the investigation.

He also said that investigators had more information than they did the day of the shooting.

Smiley said that a website for community resources has been launched and could be found here.

He also said that not all victim families had been notified due to travel issues.

All classes and exams for the rest of the semester had also been cancelled and students were free to leave campus.
