Smithfield Fire Department responded to Leeland Mowry Drive where they found a home completely engulfed in flames.
Officials tell ABC6 that the home has been vacant for several years and, while there have not been any issues with vandalism or break-ins at this point, the cause of the fire is suspicious.
“There’s no electricity to the building and it wasn’t secured very well. Based upon where the fire started, it looks as though someone may have lit it, so we are handling it as a suspicious fire right now,” says Smithfield Fire Chief; Robert Seltzer.
Smithfield police are asking anyone who may have seen anything last night or early this morning to contact them with information.
One firefighter was transported to the hospital for heat exhaustion but no civilians were hurt.
