Smithfield police arrest Johnston man found with nearly 400 oxycodone pills on him

SMITHFIELD, R.I. (WLNE) — Smithfield police said that they arrested a man who was found with nearly 400 oxycodone pills over the weekend.

Police said that 39-year-old Anthony Romano was arrested and charged with possession of a schedule IV substance over 10 grams (cocaine), and possession of a schedule IV substance over 10 grams (oxycodone).

Officers initially responded to the Season’s Corner Market on Douglas Pike shortly before 7 a.m. Saturday for a possible road rage incident.

Investigators spoke to Romano as well as another driver, who claimed Romano followed him from Providence to Smithfield and threatened to shoot him.

Police searched Romano for weapons and found an unknown white powdery substance tucked into his waistband as well as a brown bag that contained 390 0xycodone pills.

One of the investigating officers got sick and had to be given a dose of Narcan by another officer. That officer was taken to to Fatima Hospital to be treated for symptoms that police said were consistent with exposure to fentanyl. He was released hours later.

Romano had his bail set at $10,000 personal recognizance and he is scheduled back in court on Nov. 7 to answer the charges.
