WEYMOUTH, Mass. (AP) — A charity soccer jamboree in memory of fallen Weymouth police Sgt. Michael Chesna is scheduled for this weekend after a yearlong hiatus because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Organizers of the Sgt. Michael Chesna Memorial Soccer Jamboree on Saturday say about 70 teams with a range of ages from children younger than 10 to adults have signed up for the event at Lovell Field, The Patriot Ledger reported.

The event will have several food trucks and more than 70 raffles for everything from restaurant gift certificates to tickets to sports events.

Chesna, 42, and city resident Vera Adams, 77, were shot and killed by the same suspect on July 15, 2018.

Money raised during this year’s jamboree will benefit the Chesna Family Fund, fund $10,000 scholarships for graduating Weymouth and Hanover high school seniors planning to study criminal justice, and support the Love for Linley Foundation, a nonprofit that offers support to families affected by pediatric cancer or other critical illness.

The goal is to raise $40,000 this year.
