Social-Emotional Learning added to curriculum in Providence

PROVIDENCE (WLNE) — Elementary schools in Providence are trying something new to help promote better attitudes and behaviors.
Classrooms will now use posters and stickers as part of a new “Social–Emotional Learning” curriculum.
It’s centered on teaching students about their feelings and how to help manage them.
Students will be awarded stickers when they show self–awareness, self–management, social awareness, and other relationship skills.
“Whenever you make decisions when you are upset, its almost always the wrong decision,” explained Providence Mayor, Jorge Elroza.
“This is something we want to teach kids at a very early age – to have the self-awareness to understand that they are not in the frame of mind to make important decisions.”
Right now, this campaign is starting at the elementary school level.
The district says it hopes to have Social-Emotional Learning in the curriculum for K-12 students by next year.
