Somerset neighborhood evacuated after car crash causes gas leak

Several homes in Somerset were evacuated Tuesday afternoon after an SUV smashed into a house and cause a gas leak.

The accident happened on High Street just after 4 p.m. when a driver drove across several yards, hitting a porch, and then crashing into a set of gas meters mounted on the outside of a home.

Emergency crews responding to the crash smelled the gas and immediately started evacuating neighbors.

It took about an hour to fix the meter. The driver was injured in the crash and taken to Rhode Island Hospital.
