SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (WLNE)- South Kingstown School Committee has been working with an outside firm on redistricting options for months, and came to a unanimous vote regarding these plans Thursday night.

Members of the school committee voted for ‘Option A,’ which will close Curtis Corner Middle School before Fall 2023.

The middle school will remain open next school year for seventh and eight grade.

Wakefield Elementary School will also be closing one year later, under the redistricting plan.

Only pre-k will be learning there for the next two year, first and fourth grade will move.

The school committee deemed part of the reason for the reconfiguration as lower enrollment.

Enrollment is down 15 to 20% over the last ten years and continues to fall, according to one school committee member.

A consultant will now work on drawing new school attendance zones based on only three elementary schools for next year.
