South Kingstown town councilor begins trial in alleged ‘body-slam’ assault case

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — This morning, the trial of a South Kingstown town councilor got underway as he faces allegations of assaulting another public figure this past summer.

Councilor Jay Wegimont faces one simple assault charge, after Narragansett Republican Town Committee member Anthony D’Ellena, said Wegimont “body-slammed” him in a hallway at South Kingstown Town Hall on June 9th.

Wegimont was subsequently placed on administrative leave from his role in the communications department at Providence Public Schools.
