Southern New England Staycations: Newport Helicopter Tours

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (WLNE) — From the mansions to the beaches to the bay, we’ve all seen the sights of Newport from the ground, but this summer, why not change your perspective?
“There’s a lot of things you don’t see from the ground that you see from above,” said Jeff Codman, owner of Middletown-based Newport Helicopter Tours.
Codman is a veteran pilot who has owned the company for 20 years. He says the helicopter tours draw all sorts of people.
“We’ve got young couples, older people, families,” said Codman.
From 1500 feet in the air, sights like Fort Adams or Newport’s beaches look totally different. Plus, sightseers are able to appreciate the true majesty of Narragansett Bay–chock full of sailboats.
“Even the locals comment that they just don’t realize how much water there is,” said Codman.
This ride delivers some views that are tough to check out by land–from Beavertail Lighthouse in Jamestown to some of Newport’s more tucked-away mansions.
“Pretty awesome. It was a breathtaking experience, you know. We got to see all the views of the beach and the mansions. It was pretty cool,” said Justin Barros of Pawtucket.
“I had a lot of butterflies, but it was very smooth. Smoother than I expected,” said Liz Giraldo of North Providence.
