Southern New England Staycations: Salisbury Farm in Johnston

JOHNSTON, R.I. (WLNE) — What better way to enjoy the crisp fall weather than out in the country, at one of Southern New England’s family-owned farms?

“It can be very tranquil actually. And they just enjoy getting, they call, back to nature,” said Lois Salisbury, co-owner of Salisbury Farm in Johnston.

At Salisbury Farm, you can get up close with the animals, even feed the llamas and goats.

There’s plenty of fresh produce for sale, plus hayrides and pumpkin picking on weekends, and–oh yeah–one of the biggest corn mazes around. That’s been a tradition here for more than 20 years.

“At first it was fairly easy to come up with an idea,” said co-owner Wayne Salisbury. “The last few years it’s become more difficult because we’re scratching our brain, what are we going to do.”

Past mazes have included a Boston Strong theme in 2013, following the marathon bombings, and a hemophilia awareness maze last year.

Wayne Salisbury says he doesn’t quite get the maze’s appeal, but there’s no disputing its popularity.

“I grew up with corn stalks, and I’m saying why would anybody want to walk in the middle of a field with a bunch of corn stalks and try and get lost. But they truly enjoy the challenge of getting through,” said Wayne Salisbury.

The farm has been in the Salisbury family since the 1800s, with Wayne and Lois at the helm since the late 1970s.

I checked out the five-acre corn maze to see if I could find my way out!
