Special Olympics RI athletes return from 2025 World Winter Games

SMITHFIELD, R.I. (WLNE) — Special Olympics Rhode Island announced the return of three athletes who traveled to Italy for the 2025 Special Olympics World Winter Games.

On March 17, Kayla Edgar of Westerly, Brianna Puglia of Narragansett, and Ian Shepherd of Newport returned from Italy with multiple wins.

According to Special Olympics RI, Kayla brought home the gold and Brianna won bronze in the 100-meter snowshoeing event. Additionally, Brianna won bronze in the 200-meter snowshoeing event.

For Alpine Skiing, Special Olympics RI said Ian “faced fierce competition on the slopes,” winning fifth in the Super G, sixth in the Slalom, and seventh in the Giant Slalom.

In the 4×100-meter relay, Kayla and Brianna secured fifth place with their team.

“Months of hard work and training paid off, earning these athletes not only medals but also unforgettable memories,” Special Olympics RI said.
