PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Due to concern for deteriorating conditions and decline in attendance, St. Casimir Parish will close for good, Rev. Edward Sousa, Parish administrator says.
After extensive discussions with the Diocesan Consulters, and the council of Priests, Bishop Thomas J. Tobin expressed his approval, announcing the closure will come into effect on July 1, 2017.
Between the years of 2014-2016 there was one wedding, with no Baptisms, first communions, or conformations.
“We salute the steadfast faith and devotion of Lithuanian Catholics who have worshipped at St. Casimir’s over the years, but time has taken its toll, and the closing is now unavoidable,” Bishop Tobin stated.
In March 2017, there was a vast amount of physical deterioration to the church roof and ceiling causing interior water damage.
Costs for the necessary long-tern repair of the church roof were estimated at around $90,000; beyond financial reach.
Only 12 people attended the last Mass, which took place on March 19th.
All efforts will be made to continue the ongoing spiritual and pastoral care of the remaining parishioners who are encouraged to attend Mass at nearby Catholic churches.
