Standoff in North Providence neighborhood

NORTH PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — A significant police presence was seen in a neighborhood in North Providence as a standoff occurred Wednesday.
The North Providence Police Department said officers responded to a home on Charles Street around 3:45 p.m. when a health clinician said that they received a call from one of their patients who said there was someone in their attic.
Police responded to the home for a well-being check, and when they arrived the 60-year-old man told them he “had a gun and the right to defend himself.”
Officers added they do not know if the man has a gun or not, as they did not see one.
The department said a precautionary perimeter was set up and state police are deciding if they should attempt to enter the house.
The man’s mother, a 90-year-old from Greece who does not speak English, was also in the home, but the suspect has not allowed anyone to try to communicate with her.
Charles Street has also remained open due to the driveway being large, but parts of Miner Street are blocked.
