State and health leaders break ground on The Miriam Hospital’s $125 million construction project

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Providence Mayor Brett Smiley, Pawtucket Mayor Donald Grebien, and Brown University Health leaders gathered at The Miriam Hospital on Tuesday for the groundbreaking of the hospital’s $125 million construction and renovation project.

According to a spokesperson for the hospital, the project will include a state-of-the-art Emergency Department, single-occupancy inpatient rooms, and infrastructure upgrades across the campus, which will “enhance both patient experience and work environment for The Miriam’s 2,800 dedicated caregivers.”

One piece of the project includes the modernization of the building, which will feature a dedicated emergency entrance and private check-in area, an improved emergency department layout, and increased accessibility for older patients.

The upgrades come as the hospital approaches its 100th anniversary.

“As we approach The Miriam’s 100th anniversary, this project is both a celebration of our legacy and a commitment to our future,” The Miriam Hospital president and Brown University Health chief quality executive Maria Ducharme said. “It will provide our community with a modern emergency department and private inpatient rooms designed for safety, comfort, and healing. I’m deeply grateful to our incredible team whose compassionate care and expertise continue to define The Miriam Hospital’s legacy.”
