State officials seek removal of electric billing adjustment

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ State officials are trying to do away with the electricity billing adjustment.
Attorney General Peter Kilmartin and Lt. Gov. Daniel McKee announced Tuesday they will submit expert testimony in National Grid’s case before the state’s public utilities commission. The testimony will be submitted by Friday.
Electricity rates are approved by the commission twice a year and locked in for six months. Customers who switch from National Grid before the sixth-month period is over may be charged a billing adjustment.
National Grid spokesman David Graves says the company is required by law to recover the entire amount it pays to the companies generating the electricity. Kilmartin says the practice is not illegal but needs to be more transparent.
A public hearing is scheduled for June 4.
