State Police respond after contractor finds cannonballs during construction in Waltham

WALTHAM, Mass. (WLNE) — Massachusetts State Police said Tuesday that a dozen cannonballs were recovered from a commercial construction site in Waltham.

According to police, a contractor working on the site called police after locating the cannonballs while excavating a trench.

The Waltham Fire Department, State Police Bomb Squad, Hazardous Materials Emergency Response Team and ATF agents all responded to the scene and uncovered various projectiles of different sizes.

In total, 12 cannonballs, including one more modern projectile were uncovered and were successfully countercharged, making them safe for disposal.
