A Rhode Island State Police cruiser was rear-ended on the highway Thursday afternoon.

The crash happened on 95 North around 2:00 p.m. near Branch Avenue, just before exit 24.

State Police say the trooper was outside of the car working a detail in a construction zone, when a car veered off the road and hit a truck, then slammed into the cruiser.

The driver, identified as 27-year-old  Sean Byrnes, of Somerset, is charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, reckless driving, and possession of heroin.

Byrnes was sent to the hospital for evaluation since he was complaining of pain. The trooper is fine.

The accident remains under investigation.
