Strong winds spread Worcester fire to next door house, 15 displaced

WORCESTER, Mass. (WLNE) — Firefighters worked to extinguish a three-alarm fire on Stoneland Road Monday morning.

Wind-fueled flames caused the fire to jump from a three-story house to the neighboring home.

Five residents and five animals were displaced from the three-story home, and ten additional residents were displaced from the house next door.

Adam Roche, Worcester assistant fire chief, noted that the wind gusts and cold temperatures made it hard for firefighters to put out the flames.

“Obviously it was very cold, obviously very windy, after yesterday’s weather, the roads are really packed with ice and slippery conditions,” said Roche.

Firefighters arrived around 5 a.m. on Monday, and crews extinguished the fire within an hour, but the fire had already spread.

“The wind blew onto the house next door and also some ember blew to a house on the street over and had a small fire,” said Roche.

“We were able to dispatch crews from the scene to the next street over and extinguish that small fire.”

No firefighters or residents were injured.

Red Cross and first responders stayed on the scene to assist families in need.
