CRANSTON, R.I. (WLNE) – A student was hit by a city owned vehicle Thursday morning in the area of a Cranston Middle School.

Police confirm that a student was struck while crossing the street on her way to Bain Middle School Thursday morning.

Police say the crash was reported just after 7:20 a.m. at the intersection of Gansett Avenue and Trainor Street.

When crews arrived on the scene they found an 11-year-old girl who reported being injured as a result of being struck by a Ford F-150 pickup truck.

The driver of the city owned pick-up truck was a city employee and remained on scene to cooperate with police, according to a police press release.

An investigation revealed that the 11-year-old was walking with another juvenile on their way to school. Once they reached the intersection of Trainor Street, police say they began to cross the street using the crosswalk.

Meanwhile the pick-up truck  was traveling north on Gansett Avenue and suddenly turned left onto Trainor Street and struck the 11-year-old girl while she was walking in the crosswalk, police say.

The juevnile that was walking with the victim spotted the oncoming pick-up truck and was able to get out of the way in time, police say.

The 11-year-old girl was transported to Hasbro Children’s Hospital with non-life threatening injuries and is in stable condition, according to police.

Police say it should be noted that at the time the driver of the pickup entered Trainor Street, was a time where access is prohibited from Gansett Avenue (one-way street) from 7:00 am-9:00 am and 2:00 pm-4:00 pm weekdays which is marked.

The driver of the vehicle received citations for the following motor vehicle offenses:

  • Failure to Yield Right of Way for a Pedestrian in a Cross Walk
  • Obedience to Traffic Control Device
  • Manner of Turning at an Intersection
  • Vehicle Turning Left or Right-Right of Way

Police say drugs and alcohol do not appear to be a factor.
