Students and officials at Brown University wrap up first day of negotiations

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Some Brown University students are now on day six of their pro-Palestinian protest out on the main green, but their protest could be coming to an end.

The first day of negotiations between students and university officials concluded Monday, following President Christina Paxson’s letter offering five students an opportunity to attend the next Brown University corporation meeting.

Paxson offered those five students representing the encampment a chance to speak with a group of corporation members about their arguments for divestment from groups they say are aiding in Israel’s war effort in Gaza, in exchange for the encampment peacefully ending over the next few days.

However, Paxson has not agreed to drop the charges for the 41 students arrested back in December.

Students spent the majority of the afternoon chanting and surrounding University Hall, saying that although they are in active negotiations, they still want the university to drop those charges.

This comes after another letter was sent to students over the weekend saying students had until 5:00 p.m. Monday to either admit to violating student conduct, face probation and leave the encampment, or face an administrative review meeting.
