Students at Dartmouth High School to turn in phones at start of class

DARTMOUTH, Mass. (WLNE) — A new cell phone policy will be starting at Dartmouth High School this fall.
Principal Ryan Shea announced last month that students will have to check their phones into “cell hotels” when going into the classroom.
The measure has been put into place to help curb disruption in the classroom, according to Shea.
Violation of the new policy will result in after school detentions, ranging from five minutes to an hour.
Shea said that this is a compromise and allows students to carry their phones throughout the day instead of leaving them in their locker, which was considered “extreme.”
“We don’t want them to take their eyes off of learning,” said Shea. “Every time we get a text or every time we get an alert or every time we get a buzz, our eyes go off our learning, you miss part of the lesson, then you come back so that’s kind of the reason for the policy.”
Shea also said students will be required to check-in their wireless headphones.
