Superman building restoration work to begin this month

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The Superman building, an icon of the Providence skyline, will be restored starting this month.
High Rock Westminster, LLC announced Thursday they selected Consigli Construction Co., Inc as the contractor for the long-awaited redevelopment.
“We are extremely excited to be making today’s announcements as the process to begin the redevelopment and repurposing of 111 Westminster Street has finally arrived. We have the utmost confidence in Consigli as they have handled rehabilitation and landmark restoration projects throughout the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast,” said David Sweetser, manager of High Rock Westminster.

The first phase of the restoration will take about 6 to 9 months and will involve work like interior demolition and asbestos treatment.
The work will begin on the upper floors and will require an outside elevator. The first phase will not impact the Westminster Street side of the building.
The initial wave of improvements will cost about $25 million. It will not include any public tax dollars.
Gov. Dan McKee said the whole project will cost $220 million. The building will have 285 apartments and commercial, retail, and event space.
The building was last used as a Bank of America and has been empty since April 2013.
