Supporters hold rally for Tufts student detained by ICE

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — A rally is being held Friday ahead of a hearing for the Tufts University grad who was detained by Immigrations and Customs Enforcement.

According to our Boston affiliate WCVB, 30-year-old Rumeysa Ozturk is attending Friday’s bail hearing remotely despite the U.S. Court of Appeals order that she be transferred back to Vermont.

Ozturk is currently being held in Louisiana.

A federal court judge ordered the government to send Ozturk back to Vermont where she was when her attorney challenged the detainment.

The government then appealed that order to the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

Earlier this week, the court denied the government’s appeal and ordered Ozturk to be sent back to New England by today.

Ozturk’s attorneys are asking the court to release her on bail so she can return to Tufts while her immigration case continues.

Federal officials have accused Ozturk, without evidence, of supporting Hamas.
