Suspect from Rhode Island dies after Connecticut bank robbery investigation and standoff

GROTON, Conn. (WLNE) — The Groton Police Department said that a Charlestown man who was a suspect in a bank robbery investigation died during a standoff on June 12.

27-year-old Zachary Fallon died at the hospital, while a second suspect, 56-year-old Shaun Fallon, remained hospitalized.

Police responded to the Chelsea Groton Bank on Gold Star Highway for a reported bank robbery around 10:30 a.m.

Two suspects said they had a weapon and passed a note to a teller demanding cash before fleeing the scene.

The department said that a subsequent investigation found the vehicle the suspects fled in at a motel on Route 12 around 5 p.m.

Police alleged that the two men told responding police that they had firearms and explosives and would not surrender from their motel room.

The motel and surrounding buildings were then evacuated, and around 11 p.m. police said they heard gunshots from within the motel room.

The two suspects were found suffering from gunshot wounds, and they were transported to the hospital.

No explosive device was found.

The department said the investigation was still active and anyone with information was asked to call 860-441-6712.
