Suspect in custody? Analyst ‘confident’ Mangione is CEO killer

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — 26-year-old Luigi Mangione was arrested Monday in relation to the shooting death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson on Dec. 4.

Analyst Todd McGhee told ABC 6 he’s confident police found the person responsible, noting law enforcement “cannot make an arrest unless they have probable cause.”

According to McGhee, digital images of the suspect in Manhattan from right before the shooting were a key factor in the investigation.

“Looking at the partial images, even when his mask is up, you can see the familiarity,” McGhee said.

“Being able to capture evidence like that and be able to leverage that with the resources of NYPD, and I’m sure federal partners, it was just a matter of short time before this individual was brought to justice,” he continued.

McGhee explained that by coupling the footage with eyewitness accounts, investigators were able to find a lead.

“They’ve got evidence that is going to put him at the crime scene at the shooting,” he said. “They’re going to have evidence that will likely show some sort of motive as well.”

“All of that information is just part of a massive search that went underway in this investigation which ultimately led them over to a neighboring state in Pennsylvania,” McGhee added.

McGhee also told ABC 6 News how incidents similar to this one could be prevented in the future.

“We need to understand the mindset, we need to understand the motive,” he said. “Law enforcement needs to better educate the different industries that are impacted so we don’t have this type of thing happen again.”
