Suspect in Newburyport carjacking arrested in Rhode Island

NEWBURYPORT, Mass. (WLNE) — Rhode Island State Police and the Newburyport Police Department said the suspect in a carjacking in Newburyport that left a 77-year-old man with serious injuries was arrested in Rhode Island.

46-year-old David Agneta was charged with carjacking, assault and battery on an elderly or disabled person, and possession of a stolen motor vehicle.

Newburyport police said the carjacking occurred around 3 p.m. when the suspect allegedly shoved the victim to the ground in their driveway and then stole their car.

Rhode Island State Police said Agneta was arrested in Exeter around 11:30 p.m. when officers responded to a disabled motor vehicle on Route 95 South.

He is expected to be arraigned in Rhode Island on July 28 before being brought to Massachusetts for the charges there.
