Suspects in Providence shots fired incident appear in court
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Two suspects arrested in a Thursday night shots fired incident in Providence faced a judge Friday.
Orlando Torres, 20, and Anthony Reed, 28, were arrested in connection to the 6:30 p.m. incident that occurred at Shiloh Street and Hyacinth Street.
Torres is charged with possession of a firearm without a license and resisting legal or illegal arrest.
Reed is charged with conspiracy to possess a firearm, eluding a law enforcement officer in a high-speed pursuit and failing to stop after an accident resulting in damage to a vehicle.
Both suspects had their cases moved to Providence Superior Court.
The judge said that Torres is currently out on bail on multiple prior gun charges.
Police responded to reports of shots fired Thursday night at the intersection, and arriving officers saw a vehicle flee the scene.
The driver and passenger abandoned the vehicle after a brief pursuit and fled on foot and were taken into custody.
There were no injuries in the incident.
“I commend the outstanding work of our Task Force officers and our Patrol division Officers for their swift and decisive actions in this incident,” said Providence Police Chief Colonel Oscar Perez.
“Their immediate response to reports of gunfire, rapid pursuit of the fleeing suspects, and successful apprehension led to the recovery of a firearm and ensured the safety of the community. Their dedication and professionalism continue to make a critical difference in keeping our streets safe.”
Both suspects will next appear in court in June.
