SWANSEA, Mass. (WLNE) – Firefighters in Swansea responded to a basement fire Wednesday morning that forced an elderly couple out of their home.

Crews responded to a call from the owners of a Second Street home around 8:15 a.m. Wednesday to find the basement on fire and the house filled with smoke. Flames soon began seeping out of the basement and through the walls of the home.

Firefighters were able to knock down the fire in under an hour. No injuries were reported.

“When we arrived on scene there was an obvious fire in the basement,” said Deputy Fire Chief Michael Patterson. “It was difficult access, so we stretched two hand lines down to the basement to extinguish it.”

The home is not a complete loss, but building inspectors say it will be a while before it is inhabitable again.

“There is heavy fire damage to the basement and significant smoke damage throughout the rest of the house,” said Deputy Chief Patterson.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
