NEWPORT, R.I. – A replica of an 18th century command ship will be repaired after being damaged during a storm in Rhode Island last year.
Thorpe Leeson, captain and owner of the vessel said he hopes to have the Tall Ship Providence back in the water in a year.
A blizzard back in January 2015 blew the 110-foot vessel off its cradle support at Newport Shipyard, tearing a hole in the hull.
The mast and eight spars also were damaged.
A replica of John Paul Jones’ first command ship, the sloop Providence was built for the 1976 bicentennial.
The original ship was built by John Brown, of Providence.
It was then chartered and purchased by the state General Assembly to defend the colony’s shipping from British attacks.
