Taunton man caught texting and driving, flees police

TAUNTON, Mass. (WLNE) — A Taunton man fled state police after a traffic stop led to the discovery of an illegal firearm on Route 24 Saturday morning.

Massachusetts State troopers initiated a traffic stop at about 10:41 a.m. on Route 24 southbound in Avon, Mass. for a 2000 Toyota Camry Solara allegedly to have violated texting-and-driving laws and marked lanes.

The driver was indentified as Nicholas H. Davis, 31, of Taunton. An investigation and subsequent search of the vehicle found an illegally possessed and loaded Glock .45 caliber handgun.

As soon as police spotted the gun, Davis fled on foot into the woods.

The state trooper that stopped him chased behind him on foot while other troopers and Avon Police established a perimeter. A state police K-9 unit and air wing responded to assist, as well.

Davis was located behind a residence on Winship Way in Stoughton.

He was placed under arrest with a slew of charges, including several for illegal possession of a firearm, failing to stop for police, resisting arrest and texting and driving.

Davis is being held on $50,000 bail. He will be arraigned Monday in Stoughton District Court.
