Taunton police investigating home invasion shooting
TAUNTON, Mass. (WLNE) — The Taunton Police Department is investigating a home invasion that resulted in a person getting shot.
22-year-old Joshua Manuel Deleon of New Bedford was charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, armed assault with intent to murder, and home invasion, among several other charges.
The department said that around 10 p.m. police responded to a home on Newcomb Place after a 911 call in the area where a person was screaming.
Additional backup units were then dispatched to the area due to reports of gunshots
Police said they entered a second floor apartment, where they saw two men struggling on the ground.
The officers said they saw a firearm, which caused them to point their own firearms at the two and order them to stop fighting, which the men complied to.
When police noticed one of the men was suffering from a gunshot wound and called for EMTs.
Deleon was also injured, suffering head trauma among other injuries. He was noted to be wearing body armor, and police found a total of three firearms as well as bullet casings on the floor.
During the investigation, police said they noticed that bullet holes in the apartment above the one where the fight took place indicated the gun may have been fired during the struggle. No one in the above apartment was injured.
Deleon and the other man were transported to the hospital for their injuries. Deleon is being treated for serious injuries while in police custody, while the other man is expected to recover.
The department said the two men appear to be known to each other, and the incident was not a random act of violence.
The incident appeared to begin outside of Taunton and is still being investigated.
