Tax preparer gets prison time for identity theft

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ A Providence woman is going to prison for selling minors’ identities to people who wanted to increase their tax refunds.

Forty-year-old Evelyn Nunez was sentenced Friday in U.S. District Court to 30 months in prison and ordered to pay more than $1.4 million to the IRS and the state. She pleaded guilty in December to one count each of conspiracy to defraud the government and aggravated identity theft.

Investigators say Nunez stole identifying information of minor dependents on legitimate tax returns prepared by her company, NBP Multiservices in Cranston, and sold it to other tax filers for them to use to increase their refunds.

Authorities say the scheme defrauded the IRS of more than $1.3 million and the state of more than $65,000.

Nunez’s attorney, Olin Thompson, declined to comment.
