EAST GREENWICH, R.I. – A teenage girl was hit and killed by a train in East Greenwich Sunday afternoon, according to Amtrak officials. West Warwick Superintendent confirmed today, she was a student there.

The accident happened around 2:30 p.m. near King Street. 378 people were on board the Northeast regional 135 train that hit her. Once the accident happened, they were all removed from the train. Nobody on the train was hurt. An Amtrak employee told ABC6 News the victim was near the tracks and panicked, which resulted in her getting hit. According to Amtrak officials the train is capable of traveling up to 125 miles per hour.
Classmates say the community is heartbroken.

"She has a lot of friends in school. She was very popular. She didn’t hate anybody, she liked everybody," says classmate Cameron Gauvin.

The superintendent spoke with us over the phone saying in part.."She was a beloved member of the community and will be greatly missed."
Students say the hallways and classrooms were very quiet today, a very emotional day for those who knew her. The 15 year old was a junior, and we’re told a member of the volleyball team.

"She always tried to help others. She was a very funny girl and she made everyone feel special," says classmate Asia Johnson.
