The Bells Newport mansion demolition delayed until February

NEWPORT, R.I. (WLNE) — The Bells in Newport was once a cornerstone along the ocean, and now it’s set to be demolished.

The demolition, set for February 5, will bookend the history of the mansion, first built in 1876 and now in a state of disrepair and a big draw for trespassing.

Officials expect an asbestos trailer to be delivered to the site on Wednesday to allow for the abatement work continue.

The abatement phase of the demolition started in December of 2023.

Work has been delayed due to recent inclement weather, but officials say the trailer delivery is at the center of the delays.

It is expected to take several weeks to demolish the entire building.
