The Grace School adds team sports

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE-TV) The Grace School Huskies made a name for themselves this basketball season.
“We’re a competitive team,” said Maurice Hill, 14. “We know how to work together.”
The 8th grade student is proud of what he and his friends have accomplished, and he should be. The young athletes made school history this winter.
“They were nervous. I was nervous,” said Coach Scott Marques as he reflected on their first game. “The score didn’t work out great at first, but they all had a blast.”
Meeting Street has always been athletic, with adaptive bikes and pool therapy. But this is the first time they have teams since recently expanding to a full middle school. They started with unified basketball.
“Everyone is really excited,” said Margaret Knowlton, director of school age programs. “The children have been practicing really hard.”
At those practices, those who need a helping hand have a teacher by their side. But come game time, the players assist each other.
“Getting my teammates points was my favorite moment of the game,” said Hill.
“It’s awesome to see the bond between the students,” said Marques.
The response by the community has been overwhelming, with the gym packed full of fans for each match up.
“It’s just wonderful. It’s really what we’ve envisioned for years,” said Knowlton.
The Huskies wrapped up their season on Wednesday night. They plan to add more sports teams in the spring.
